Ode to Beautiful Joe

The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society and The Meaford Public Library hosted an Old Fashioned Family and Dog Fun Day at Beautiful Joe Park in Meaford on July 15th, celebrating 125 years of Beautiful Joe. Beautiful Joe was a real dog from Meaford who was mistreated by his owner. A children’s book by Margaret Marshall Saunders was written in 1893 from Joe’s point of view, which became part of Meaford’s history. Her book about Beautiful Joe sold 7 million copies world-wide in the 1930s. Beautiful Joe has a monument in the park where he is buried. There was a historical skit by a group from Meaford Community Theatre, St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs, musicians, tours, a blessing of the animals and an OPP Canine Unit demo.
