As we prepare for municipal elections on October 24, affordable housing should be top of mind. Addressing the housing continuum – from homelessness through to market-rate homeownership – we need to come together to tackle the urgent and persistent issue of housing affordability. Urgency is key given the need for affordable housing. Private sector offerings will only meet some of this great demand, non-market offerings will be critical.

At Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone has the right to a safe and decent place to live, and that it benefits all of society when they do. That’s why we are making housing a priority because decent housing transforms futures, strengthens communities, and fosters resiliency and stability that can transcend generations. We are committed to partnering with the government, with other affordable housing advocates, and with communities at most risk, to tackle the housing crisis in Ontario.

• According to the Ontario Home Builders Association, one million homes will need to be built over the next decade. Supply is critical to making housing affordable.

• Make publicly owned land available for affordable housing, prioritizing not-for-profit affordable housing providers like Habitat with access in high priority areas, decommissioned schools, vacant or surplus lands used to create affordable housing.

• Waive fees and development charges for affordable homeownership and encourage local developers to partner with not-for-profit housing providers such as Habitat.

Encourage the provincial government to revise the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, 2020, and other related legislation and plans to enable municipalities to increase their supply of affordable housing in a timely manner.

As the housing affordability gap continues to widen across the nation, families living with low-income are increasingly less likely to qualify for homeownership and continue to struggle to access affordable housing. We must act now, and we must act together to support affordable housing across the continuum, including affordable homeownership.

For 20 years, Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay has made a difference in the lives of local families living with low-income. Today, we need your help more than ever before. By supporting Habitat, you are showing your commitment to a healthy community and helping those in need.
