Looking back to 1971

Sheila Nasmith, Jane Underwood, and Diana Pegram were Montrealers who were all part of the mass exodus to Toronto during the 1960’s and 70’s era of Quebec political unrest.

Settling into a new city, meeting new neighbours and friends, and exploring new surroundings, kept them, happily, very busy. When winter arrived; however, they were desperately missing their ski fun back in Quebec.

Luckily by then, they had developed a new social circle of ski buddies in the Toronto area. This fledgling group of ski enthusiasts came up with an idea. And voila! Skicousi was launched in the winter of 1971. Carpools were organized to Horseshoe Valley and Medonte as both resorts ran a children’s nursery. Word spread and the group expanded. Originally Skicousi was a mid-week ladies’ getaway. As demographics and demand changed so did Skicousi. Membership has swelled to almost 400 with many more men joining in the fun.

Looking ahead to 2022

Skicousi members are getting ready for some great outdoor experiences this season. Each of the private clubs where we ski, snowboard, and snowshoe are looking forward to welcoming us back in our 50th anniversary year. Currently, the ski clubs are finalizing their plans on how to open safely with Covid 19 protocols. With this physical and mental health crisis on everyone’s minds, this year could prove to be busier than ever for Skicousi and the winter sports industry in general. More people are working and learning from home and have flexible schedules for mid-week winter activities.

For fifty years Skicousi has operated as a non-profit club and has been run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Every Thursday in January and February enthusiastic members participate in exclusive ski days at selected private clubs in the Georgian Triangle.

Group and private lessons are available at a very low cost to our members. Our excellent Snow School is staffed with top-notch instructors, many of whom are Level 3 or 4 certified. Each lesson is an hour and a half long, with the same instructor each week.

Skicousi has always had a robust calendar of social events including après parties with live music and themed events with prizes and awards. This season we will offer our annual ski trips to resorts in Europe and Western Canada. With brighter days ahead in mind, we are currently planning ski and snowboard adventures for the 2022 season.

Are you intrigued? Do you want to liven up your winter? If you want to improve your skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing and meet some great people, come and join us! Check our website for full details and registration. See you on the slopes!
